Rensselaer County
NYGenWeb
My name is Debby Masterson, and I'm the Coordinator of the Rensselaer County NYGenWeb site. I now live in Florida. Living far away has its drawbacks, but with the help of people who generously volunteer their time and material, the Rensselaer County NYGenWeb site is providing a wealth of online information for genealogical researchers both far and near, who can access it for free from the comfort of their own homes. If you have genealogical source information you wish to share with others as others have shared with you, or if you would like to provide clerical assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

NYGenWeb
A message was sent out over the GEN-NYS-L list in June 1996 asking if anyone would be interested in starting a New York State GenWeb page similar to a highly successful project in operation in Kentucky. Many people expressed an interest in this idea. About the same time, Jeff Murphy, Coordinator of the KYGenWeb, decided to go national with the idea, and out of that grew the USGenWeb Project and the NYGenWeb Project. Volunteers were recruited who were willing to co-ordinate the assembly and development of databases and who would generally oversee the contents of the GenWeb pages of New York state's counties. Contact the Coordinator named on the county page if you wish to add your data to that county GenWeb's database. If the New York county in which you are interested does not have a page and you wish to participate, please contact NYGenWeb State Coordinator, Robert G. Sullivan, Martha Magill or Tim Stowell. The NYGenWeb site is at http://www. nygenweb.net.

USGenWeb
The USGenWeb Project is a huge, well-organized effort to make available genealogical information on the Internet FREE OF CHARGE. This project is supported by thousands of volunteers all around the world. The USGenWeb was born when a highly successful project covering the state of Kentucky, coordinated by Jeff Murphy, went national. The national system is divided into state GenWebs, and each state GenWeb is divided into counties. Each county, except for a few that are yet to be "adopted", has a Coordinator who is responsible for maintaining a site of resources which are available for that county. On each site you will find a variety of genealogy records, depending on the resources of the Coordinator and/or the contributions of visitors like yourself. If the county in which you are interested does not have a Coordinator and you wish to be responsible for it, please contact the State Coordinator of the state in which the county lies. The USGenWeb site is located at http://www.usgenweb.org/.

Canada GenWeb
Rensselaer County, NY lies on a direct path between New York City and Montreal, and the links between our county and Canada have been close and frequent for over two centuries. Your gateway to the Canada GenWeb is provided here as a courtesy to our neighbors to the north. You can visit Canada GenWeb by clicking on http://www.rootsweb.com/~canwgw/.

WorldGenWeb
The WorldGenWeb Project deserves mention here, even though, technically, the USGenWeb Project, our parent GenWeb, is not directly affiliated to the WorldGenWeb Project. The area that eventually became Rensselaer County, NY was settled by Europeans as long ago as the early 17th century. Many of us can trace our ancestors back in this same location to the emigrant from Europe. Once you find your emigrant ancestor, your next step gives you cause to cross the Atlantic and venture into the records of other countries. It is the WorldGenWeb Project that affords you access to genealogical research outside the USA. Founded in 1996 by Dale Schneider, the WorldGenWeb covers every continent of the world. The WorldGenWeb Project's website is located at http://www.worldgenweb.org/. The WorldGenWeb is also your gateway to Genuki, the GenWeb for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
